PIF was proud to represent New Zealand at the SDGs Conference 2026 in New York, joining 56 global NGOs and representatives from 30 countries for this annual international gathering. Held each year alongside the high-level United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) program, the SDGs Conference brings together civil society organisations, government representatives, diplomats, academics, educators and other global partners to share ideas, strengthen collaboration and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference provides an important platform for dialogue on issues affecting communities around the world and highlights initiatives that contribute to a more inclusive, peaceful and sustainable future.
As part of the 2026 program, New Zealand’s SDGs Delegate, Dr. Melissa Derby, Race Relations Commissioner, accompanied by a team from New Zealand’s education sector, joined representatives from 30 countries in New York. Dr. Derby represented Aotearoa New Zealand at #SDGs2026 and contributed to Panel 2, speaking on “Strategies and initiatives that promote dialogue, empathy, and common purpose across divides.” Her participation provided an opportunity to share New Zealand perspectives and experiences while contributing to international discussions on dialogue, empathy, inclusion and social cohesion. The New Zealand delegation participated in the High-Level Reception of SDGs 2026, which brought together more than 150 global partners, including Ministers, UN Ambassadors, diplomats, academics, journalists and human rights defenders. The reception featured Mr. Anthony Simpson, Deputy Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations, who addressed the gathering. Ms. Pauline Cornwell, Co-Chair of the PIF Advisory Board, also had the opportunity to speak at the event, representing PIF and New Zealand. During the New York visit, the New Zealand delegation was warmly hosted by Mr. Simpson at the Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations, providing an opportunity for further engagement and exchange with the Mission. PIF’s participation in SDGs 2026 reflects its ongoing commitment to dialogue, education, community connection and shared responsibility, while contributing to international conversations that promote understanding, empathy and common purpose across communities and cultures. The 2026 conference was a valuable opportunity for PIF and the New Zealand delegation to share local perspectives, build international connections and contribute to the global dialogue surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals.
